Madison

Madison’s economy has changed dramatically over the past 20 years. Where agriculture was strong previously, economic activity is shifting towards manufacturing and retail. The largest employer within city limits is Intergraph, a computer equipment company. Many residents also commute to Huntsville, where the technology and research sectors are particularly strong.

While Madison is in the center of a thriving economic region, the city has a decidedly family-oriented atmosphere. Outdoor recreation and community events are the preferred leisure time activities. At the heart of Madison’s recreation system are more than 20 developed city parks. The two largest of these, Dublin Memorial Park Facility and Palmer Park, are bustling with activity on the weekends. Recreational and competitive sports are popular in Madison, with youth soccer having a particularly strong presence. Dublin and Palmer Park collectively, have more than 10 soccer fields, plus a walking track, outdoor and indoor pools, multipurpose room, tennis courts, lighted football fields, baseball fields and batting cages.

Nearby Huntsville keeps the region’s history alive with a selection of specialized museums. Those interested in exploring the development of Madison County should be sure to visit the EarlyWorks Museum Complex. EarlyWorks features three attractions: the Alabama Constitution Village, Historic Huntsville Depot & Museum and EarlyWorks Children’s History Museum. Other notable historic sites in the area are the Twickenham Historic District and Weeden House Museum in Huntsville, and Clay House Museum in Madison.
